The Parks and Recreation Department is offering WHF activities on Tuesdays in the Girl Scout Hut, 739 W Avenue A, at 2 pm. The activities are free and open to any age.

Health/Ecology/Lifestyle/Preparation (H.E.L.P.)

Wed, Feb. 7, 7 pm - “Outward Bound War Veterans Program”
(Doors open at 6:30pm with Marion Fersing playing the piano) in the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St.
Bob O'Rourke will speak on a tremendous opportunity for adventure and self-discovery to our veterans of combat operations in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom). The programs offer numerous wilderness adventures exclusively for war veterans. Their goals include helping participating veterans build a supportive community with other war veterans; facilitating discussions on readjustment and transition challenges; and re-energizing and reinvigorating spirits with adventures and challenges in the beautiful outdoors.

P.A. Movie Time

Join Parks and Recreation as we show off our collection of public domain movies. Titles include mystery, westerns, horror, comedy, and sci-fi, monthly from November through March. Free popcorn will be served. Participants may bring any non-alcoholic beverage of their choosing. Doors open at 6:30, movie begins at 6:55 pm. Check to see which location movie is shown each month!

Oklahoma Annie Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St.
(1951) Starring Judy Canova. Raucous musical western comedy with backwoods shopkeeper falling in love with the sheriff. While she performs an act of courage, she not only earns herself a deputy's badge, but also the right to stick close to her handsome lawman. Soon the two of them are working to rid the community of corrupt politicians and a local gambling den full of bad guys. In a unique turn on the normally male dominated theme, Judy rallies the town's womenfolk to come to the rescue of the sheriff.

Enjoy evening concerts in January and February free of charge. Music starts at 7 pm at the Port Aransas Community Theatre, 2327 Hwy. 361. Come relax with an evening of music.

2012 Groundhog Day Shadow Stroll

Take a 1-mile walk around Roberts Point Park and seek the elusive "Port A Phillip" to celebrate the approaching end of winter. Start time is 10 am on Thursday, February 2, 2012, from the Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion in Roberts Point Park, north of the ferry landing. No charge.

Working lab develops and commercializes shrimp and sea urchin farming industries for Texas and the US; develops sea urchin feed and production technology for biomedical and ecotoxicological research; develops starfish feed and production for regeneration and stem cell production; and evaluates fishery processing, biofuel/biodiesel, and grain crops as nutritional replacements in shrimp feeds. Winter Walking Tour ~ Sat, Feb. 11, 9:32 am
at The Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture


Led by Educational Docent Judy Perkins of the Mission-Aransas Reserve, in collaboration with the City of Port Aransas Parks & Recreation, this 2-mile tour is a great way to see beautiful Port A flora & fauna during winter.

Bring binoculars, camera, and water.

Citywide Garage Sale

Saturday, Feb. 18 is the date for the annual Citywide Garage Sale co-sponsored by Keep Port Aransas Beautiful (KPAB) and Port Aransas Parks & Recreation Dept. The event encourages recycling, re-using and re-purposing "good stuff" while reducing items taken to the landfill.

Individual sale sites will be listed on a map and posted in the South Jetty. To register a home sale site on the map or request a map to be emailed to you, contact Parks and Recreation Community Program Coordinator Pam Greene at 749-4158 or email pamg@cityofportaransas.org

If unable to hold a sale at your location, rent a table in the Community Center by calling Darlene Secich at 749-7144.
