National Night 2010 was a success. There were four residences from various parts of the city as well as one business that participated as hosts for the activities. There were block parties, BBQs, self defense presentations and lots of activities. This year's theme "Give Neighborhood Crime and Drugs a Going Away Party” was evident as multitudes of Port Aransas residents came out to get to know their neighbors and mingle with local police officers, fire fighters and EMS personnel. We would like to make National Night bigger and better in 2011 by having more hosting neighborhoods and businesses next year. It is important to present a united front against crime and drugs in this community. Look forward to seeing you next year. |

The Port Aransas Police Department and the Port Aransas Schools celebrated Red Ribbon Week on October 25-29, 2010. The feedback from the students, teachers, parents and officers was that the event was a success. Officers visited with Olsen Elementary School students throughout the week giving them red ribbons, popcorn and pickles and ending the week with a pep rally. Officers led Brundrett Middle and Port Aransas High School students in a demonstration of Fatal Vision or “drunk” goggles. Officers spoke to both group about drug and alcohol laws in the State of Texas, the punishments and life effects of violating those laws, and what experiences officers have had in the field with DWIs and vehicle accidents related to Driving While Intoxicated. Students from all of the schools participated in a poster contest, and each grade had a winner. Each winner was awarded a prize package that included a t-shirt, discount coupons and other prizes supporting Red Ribbon Week. The officers also played a volleyball game with the students from Port Aransas High School to end the event. The officers put up a good fight, but the students ended up getting the best of them two games to one. All of the officers signed the game ball and left it for the school's trophy case. In all it was a fun week. |
